New Publication: Alternative Diagnostic Approaches for Various Single-Fault Conditions in Direct-Drive Low-Speed Coreless Permanent Magnet Generators

The Technical University of Crete has recently published a study on “𝘈𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘨𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘝𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘚𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦-𝘍𝘢𝘶𝘭𝘵 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘋𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵-𝘋𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘸-𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘵 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴 ”.

This paper supports the project by improving condition monitoring for the modular CGEN Engineering generator used in wave energy applications. The study shows that faults such as demagnetization, inter-turn short circuits, and eccentricity produce distinct signatures in stator-current and torque-based indicators. By combining FEA with diagnostic feature extraction, the results help identify which techniques are most effective for each fault type. This contributes directly to MEGA WAVE PTO by supporting earlier fault detection, improved maintenance planning, and more reliable operation of the PTO system in harsh marine environments.
